Building a Micro Dairy
It may not look like much right now, but I envision that this 8′ by 18′ space will make a splendid milking parlor.
A 200 gallon bulk tank and other equipment are right on the other side of the wall shown here.
We don’t have any plans for a large dairy operation.
With a “micro-dairy” system like this, I’ll be more than happy if we can accommodate milking 2 sheep or 2 cows at once.
There are lots of options for tiny dairies these days when it comes to mechanical milking equipment.
Milking Parlor Flow
We have about 24 livestock stalls in the barn and this milking parlor can be sectioned off in such a way that keeps the areas separate for proper hygiene and sanitary conditions.
This space lends itself well to a well-known dairy traffic pattern.
The cows and sheep come into the milking parlor in one entrance to get milked.
When all milked out they can exit around the “U” and head back towards the stalls in the barn.
As part of our small-scale and diversified plan, we’re looking at producing small-batch artisan cheeses with butter and raw milk for CSA members.
I also have some ideas on building a cheese cave as well. Check it out.
